The whole Balkan is suffering from a rural exodus, not only recently but for decades. Some people, who didn’t want to go abroad or work at factories in the nearest cities lived lives of hardship, herding sheep, producing cheese or doing subsistence farming. However, these Last Villagers are about to fade away within the next 10 years.
I decided to do a documentary project in a very classic way. Life hasn’t changed that much within the last hundred years, after WorldWar1 ravaged through the lands of Mariovo. Machinery is still rare, and most of the work is done by hand. Mariovo, which is a region located at the border between Macedonia and Greece is a land beyond time, a land that lies there silently, beautifully, waiting to be rediscovered by a new generation of villagers.
